Top Myths about Non Profit Organizations

Barbara Ann Garcia

People have many misconceptions about non profit organizations. Here are a list of some common ones:

  • Non profits do not require leaders:

Running a nonprofit requires exceptional leadership. Only a tiny fraction of the monies raised must be used to manage the business. Nonprofit leaders frequently operate in challenging environments, assisting those in need and resolving complex issues. Their contribution is making the world a better place. Whether it's the people or businesses you aid or the contributors who give, organizations make a difference in people's lives.

  • It Is Simple To Establish And Run A Nonprofit Organization

Many people believe that starting and running a nonprofit is more manageable than starting and running a for-profit. However, regulations and reporting at a nonprofit are just as complex as in a for-profit. It is also more challenging to raise funds when there is no initial brand recognition. Therefore, it is vital to demonstrate outcomes as soon as possible.

  • Nonprofits Do Not Base Their Decisions on Metrics

Nonprofits, in the end, are product/service-providing organizations.

The only distinction is that success in for-profits is assessed by income, but metrics in charities vary depending on the mission and service. NGOs should be held to the same criteria to verify that funds are being used to deliver value, which can only be done if nonprofits are metric-oriented.

  • The only source of funding is donations

Nonprofits rely on the generosity of patrons. But, on the other hand, nonprofit executives should not rely solely on philanthropic donations to support their operations. Instead, to diversify revenue streams and grow their missions, NGOs should attempt to mix social entrepreneurial models by selling life-enhancing products or services at accessible pricing to beneficiaries or customers.

  • Nonprofit Services Are Provided at No Cost

For years, I have fought the misconception that services offered by our nonprofit are free. Nothing is free, and someone must pay for a service that a local foundation or fundraising may finance. Taxpayers' money is occasionally used to help in service delivery. Although the ultimate client may not pay in full, someone has supplied funding to the nonprofit to supply goods/services.

  • Nonprofits are not required to make a profit

The most significant fallacy about nonprofit work, in my opinion, comes with the word "nonprofit." While profit is not the primary emphasis of our mission-driven work, nonprofits/not-for-profits must be operated exceedingly well to be sustainable. If our doors remain locked, we can't make a difference in our communities!

Myths Related To Self-Employment

Barbara Garcia

Self-employment is a different industry, and people work on their rules and regulations to set up small businesses and then make them big. While self-employment requires continuous efforts from them, it is not nonstop labor where they cannot rest.

Just like other industries, there are myths related to self-employment as well. Mentioned below are some of the most common myths related to self-employment.

  • Self-employed people work for long hours

Self-employed people tend to work longer than the employees this might be because they enjoy their job so much. Some people start a business that requires their physical presence at all times  to earn income whereas this is not the case for other businesses some can be looked at from homes online . Either way it is your choice what way you choose to set up your business. Many people set up a business  where they only get paid on if they are working such as an attorney who opens a law office and earns at an hourly rate but when the attorney is at home they don't make any kind of income.

It is not compulsory that you have to set up a business that provides you income only when you are working. Creating a business like this makes you start a job for yourself, you can make your system that generates income for you.working long hours on your business is your choice if you don't want to.

  • Self-Employment is stressful

Self-employment is less stressful compared to employment. If you are making the same amount of income you were making while employed shows that self-employment is much easier to handle as there is no one to fire you. You can work on your work timings and have the freedom to manage projects with your own choice. You can set the hours you want to work in. If you feel stressed, you can take your time off. There is no force or pressure on you.

  • Customers are always right

One of the advantages you have of being self-employed is dealing with a client and customers and firing them because of your problems and loss. There is no deal or need to deal with people that don’t respect you. If someone is causing you and your business problems, just refer them to your other competitors.

  • Self-employment requires people to do everything themselves

In self-employment, you work for yourselves; you are responsible for dealing with everything yourself. You do and can use help as it can be a burden doing everything by yourselves. You can use different softwares to help you in your business and complete the task for you on time. This would help you get over with dealings and clients faster than you think and would also eventually help in increasing your income.
